L.A. Girl Velvet Contour Highlighter Stick – Luminous
(Author ~ Sanchita)
Highlighter or strobe essential is such an addictive product that once you start using it, you just can stop yourself from ‘glowing’. I was watching few of the videos of Kim Kardashian where it has been stated that she uses a highlighter stick rather than a cream or powder highlighter for contouring. Reason? It lasts longer and looks completely natural. Indian market has very few highlighter stick in strict sense but I managed to locate this L.A. Girl Velvet Contour Highlighter Stick which is one of the best budget friendly highlighter in the market.
I have been testing this for a while now and here’s my review on it.
Shades available –
- Cashmere – white and matte.
- Luminous – a warm and pale champagne gold color.
- Radiance – cool toned champagne color.
PRICE – $5 (in U.S.) /800 INR (in India) for 5.8g
Packaging – The L.A. Girl Velvet Contour Highlighter Stick comes in a chubby fat retractable packaging. It is further accompanied by a transparent cap. The only problem with the packaging I face is that often that dome shaped highlighter interferes and the cap is stained, as a result of wasting the product. I really wish the chubby stick was slightly thinner and it would go inside. Nevertheless, the packaging is nice, easy to carry and doesn’t mess up at all. It is great for touch ups.
Shade – The shade ‘Luminous’ is a warm and pale champagne gold color. The color is an excellent one between the three available variants. The warmth in it ensures that the highlighter doesn’t look unnatural or excessively done yet the pale champagne gold touch radiates the skin like a dream. My skin tone falls between fair and medium with strong yellow under tones and this one suits me perfectly. I have been so addicted to it that I simply apply the regular sunscreen, apply this highlighter (on the highest points of the face) and blend it. Once done, I dust some matte powder on t-zone and I am done for the day. So, even for a casual event you can use this.
Pigmentation – The pigmentation of the product is really good. It swatches well on the surface of the skin and easily gives a full saturation. You won’t have to rub again and again to make the color pop. Also, you can control the pigmentation as much as you want. Little dab motion to blend on the skin will help the pigmentation to remain high to medium whereas swipe motion will diminish the color pay off and thus you can easily control it.
Texture and blending ability – The texture is butter smooth but not oily or greasy. Initially I thought it will be waxy and dry but to my surprise, it was a fantastic one. It glides on the areas really smoothly and gives a creamy layer. The blending part is really easily. For daily usage when I am running out of time, I simply use my fingers to blend but you can also use for medium sized fluffy brush or even your favorite makeup sponge. The bending is so easy and comfortable that even a beginner with highlighter will love to use this. It gives a glow but doesn’t feel oily even to my oily skin in summer and monsoon.
Formula – The product has been formulated with extracts of Jojoba Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Seed Butter, and Grape Seed Oil and thus it hydrates the skin and prevents he patchy glittery look. It sets down after some time and doesn’t really glide down the skin even in humid and hot weather conditions. The product also doesn’t melt down with sweat and grime. The formula is surely what makes the product stand out, after the amazing pale champagne gold color.
Staying power – On my oily skin, it remained for around 4-5hours when I simply used on the skin with no primer or anything. Underneath a primer, the highlighter remains for about 6 hours in humid conditions. To further elongate the staying power, I would suggest to set it with a light powder highlighter. In that way, it remains for a long time. The actual price of the product is surely worth it. Then again, the amount with which it is retailed in India is slightly high but it is one of the best highlighter I have used so far.
