Maybelline The Magnum Barbie Mascara: Review, EOTD, Swatches

(Author ~Sanchita)

I am a big fan of Maybelline’s mascaras. They are super voluminous, affordable and easily available in Indian markets. I have, so far, used every volume boost mascara from their range and I was yet to try the Magnum Barbie Mascara and Volum’ Express Falsies Push Up Drama Mascara. This time I picked up both of them on sale and have been using the Magnum Barbie Mascara for a month now. Here’s the review on the product in question.

PRICE – Rs. 399 for 9.2 ml

The Maybelline The Magnum Barbie Mascara bright and chic packaging, gives a very summer-y appeal. It has the bright yellow and pink body with the applicator attached to the cap. The applicator has a slight spoon-like curvy shape with bushy short bristles. I found the applicator to be just fine and it helps slightly in coating and separating the lashes as well. Overall, the packaging is good, light weight and travel friendly.

Coming to the texture of the mascara, it leans slightly on the thicker side. However, the mascara is not dry at all. It applies smoothly even though the texture is thick. The applicator comes to the rescue to apply and coat the lashes well. The USP of this mascara is that it has fibre based formula. What fibre based formula does is that it adds tons of length and volume to the lashes. The pigmentation is jet black and adds subtle drama with the color. The addition of length is good but nothing exceptional. The mascara also adds volume to the lashes, however, nothing dramatic or ‘Barbie’ like. If you compare with the Falsies, the volume is slightly less. The volume is enough for daily wear though and I really enjoy the appearance.

My lashes are fairly long but it has a straight structure and hence I need a good curler every time. This mascara is not very good with holding curls if you have naturally straight lashes like mine. However, the volume is good enough. The mascara requires at least 2coats to give proper volume and make sure you give 10-15secs in between coats. For the second layer, use slow motion to coat and separate the lashes too. However, more than 3coats will give you a spidery look to the lashes. Unless you want that, stop after 3rd coating.

The mascara has the tendency of slight flaking after long hours. Like I said, if you are going for the spidery look, be ready for some serious flaking. Also, this mascara is fibre based and might irritate the eyes if the particles go inside the eyes, so be careful with that. I have not experienced any crunchy feel on the lashes with two coats. The mascara is surely long wearing, waterproof and smudge proof. I was disappointed to see only one variant of this mascara as I prefer washable variant off lately.

The wear time of the mascara is really good and stays on for the whole day. I noticed the flaking only after 8-9hours of wear which is still doable for me. It has never irritated my eyes or anything. Removing the mascara is slightly tougher because of the water proof property. The price tag is quite justified for the mascara.

OVERALL – The Maybelline The Magnum Barbie Mascara comes in a bright, travel friendly packaging with a curvy dense wand. The formula is thicker and apples smoothly by adding subtle length and proper volume, but not dramatic. The mascara is to be used sparingly or else it will give spidery lashes. It is sweat proof, waterproof and smudge-proof and has a proper long wearing formula.

Packaging – catchy and vibrant, good for travelling.
Applicator – curvy spoon-shaped
Texture – thick creamy texture, feels light and dries easily.
Effect –adds slight length and decent volume for daily wear
Formula – totally smudge proof and waterproof.
Staying power – remains as long as you don’t remove it.

  • The packaging is good, light weight and travel friendly.
  • Spoon shaped curvy wand with dense bristles.
  • Coats and separates the lashes well.
  • Jet black in color.
  • Adds volume to the lashes and lengthens it slightly.
  • Sweat proof, waterproof and smudge-proof.
  • Long wearing formula.
  • Reasonable price tag.

  • Wand could have been better.
  • Too many coats will give spidery lashes.
  • Not for beginners.
  • Only one variant – water proof. (People like me prefer washable variant)
  • Removal is tough.

RECOMMENDATION – The Maybelline The Magnum Barbie Mascara is a good mix of good and bad but this mascara will be more suited for professionals who knows their lashes game well. I wouldn’t recommend this to a beginner at all. For someone who is okay with regular mascaras and wants decent volume with an affordable price tag, this is for them.
